The first week of June has been ace, superb fishing in the mornings till about 10am and then again when the sun drops which is about 7.30pm however the bit in the middle is pure dry fly stuff and without the right colour or pattern forget it, a couple of lads this past week have done poorly but the majority have had a ball, its good to see so many young lads coming at night and fishing in the evenings, with one or two doing really well, its also a massive pleasure to see the dry fly brigade having such a good time, there is the odd angler complaining about weeds however it’s the guys fishing really deep that are catching weed but its is the time of year again to pull some weeds out and hopefully this week should see the first pulls, the last couple of years have seen the grass carp keep the weeds down but alas I think they must have all expired as none have been caught for ages, Rab Grierson, Methil, fishing with his buddy John Henan, also Methil, had a good day yesterday, albeit a tad hot, Rab was the first to start catching and had for his first 3, a Brown, a Blue and a Rainbow all good fighting fish was his comments they then went on to catch quite a few more, Its that time of year when cans of juice and other drinks are taken onto the water, Please remember DO NOT throw empty tins or bottles in the water, we don’t mind emptying the boats, but its really poor manners to chuck stuff overboard, in this period of extremely hot weather, we understand that there is a need to have some forms of refreshments while you are sitting in the boats, but please be aware we operate a zero tolerance to alcohol, this is with no exception, anyone on a boat with alcohol will be expelled, this is because people drinking run the risk of injuring themselves or others, if a person wishes to drink and fish then stay on the bank, otherwise don’t do it, not only is it inconsiderate, it is positively not allowed.

Well May did not last long it’s the last day and how things have changed, the fishing is just about perfect, during the day you must have the fly that the fish want, if you don’t then you may get a follow but the connection wont be there, it is just brilliant, loads of fish cruising and feeding on whatever is hatching and there are rising fish more or less all day, however the frenzy fishing is after 8 pm and its amazing, Sat night saw a full compliment on the loch and the minute the sun went down behind the hill the frenzy just kicked into gear, suddenly everybody was catching nearly with every cast, this is great sport fishing and what it used to be like years ago, we have what I would consider just the right amount of fish in the water that the loch can support comfortably, in that there is ample feeding available down below, if they require it, yet allowing the fish to feed on flies that are breaking the surface, its good and its fast, proper sport fly fishing, jetty repairs are progressing and will soon be complete, its pleasant day out, no stress, no hassle, just relax and take in the ambience.

We are however introducing a new rule, anglers in boats after catching 9 fish must move, and it has to be to another quadrant of the loch irrespective of whether there boat partner has caught or not, the penalty is that another payment will be taken if refusal to comply then expulsion is necessary without question.


The reason for this rule is due to anglers OVER FISHING a certain spot and it is not allowing others that opportunity to catch fish, also it stops two boats trying to be in the same place at that same time.

So the fishing even although it has improved massively over the past week or so, has days of hardship now and again, yesterday Sunday saw it tricky ( although one person had 14) and the weather, very changeable, swirling winds, blowing hot and cold, so it was no surprise that last night the fishing got tricky again, however there are fish rising and feeding everywhere, its just impossible to find what they are after and trying to match it with, with something in your box, last night 5 anglers were having a good night time, lots of tugs and pulls and a few fish caught, then KAAPOW a massive thunder clap, an instantaneous bolt of lightning and 5 anglers all got an electric shock, one slightly more than the others, my son Gavin who just happened to be watching actually saw the lightning forks and the whole sky light up, with every one then running for cover as the ensuing hail storm pounded down, which lasted a few minutes, on discussing with the anglers all had felt the electric shock run through their bodies and one lad more than the others had a pretty good fright, so much so that he had flung his rod into the loch, these incidents are very rare but frightening, last night the lads had absolutely no warning, but it just demonstrates to all the need to be wearing the correct clothing and again last night we were lucky in that all were wearing proper fishing gear, as for the fishing rod that got thrown into the loch, well it is a highly conductive carbon fibre rod an Ariel for want of a better word, or even a conductor and one of the errant bolts of lightning, just happened to find its way down via this appropriately wavy thing that was vertical in the air, the good thing is that no one was hurt and that the fishing picked up after this storm had passed, this incident also shows that the need to have someone on site is a must, we take fishing, angling very serious and are always watching the water, things happen very quick and there must always be someone responsible on hand.
