Fantastic days Proper Fly Fishing on Friday at the Goldenloch, brilliant warm weather, sun shining, little breeze over the loch, flies hatching everywhere and anglers having great fishing, loads of birds, swallows and swifts feeding off the water, every angler catching, mostly using old traditional flies and dries, it was definitely the best day of the season so far, it had on the previous 4 or 5 days been building up for something good, as there was a distinct change in the weather and a much warmer feel in the mornings, and the fish were active in all areas of the loch especially up and around the bank side towards the old chalet, then it all changed for the weekend, the temperature dropped to 8.5 degrees and the wind changed to coming from the east, it had a pretty serious effect on the water, putting the fish down, but more dramatic was that it seemed to just switch the fish of feeding, so much so that the lads fishing in the last couple of days have only been able to catch using bungs and yellow dancers etc, Saturday was quite hard although a couple of lads managed to catch 9 fish each and one other lad managed to catch an amazing amount of fish, good news is that no one blanked and every one left with fish, Sunday however was even colder and the fish were nowhere in sight so most anglers had to fish quite deep, with the weed situation now pretty much under control this was possible in most areas but anglers still had to work hard to entice the fish to take the flies, but not all had to resort to these drastic measures and some stuck with buzzers and small nymphs and even dry flies and although managing to catch fish it was nothing like the fishing on Friday.

Monday 30th May woke up early and went down to the loch to get the book and watched 3 Ospreys catching fish, in the process of them actually taking a fish they must have grabbed and bombed about 3 fish each, anyway they all left carrying their rewards, what is it about ospreys, they always seem to know when I’ve not got a camera, yesterday we had a couple of beginners from Liverpool with a mate that could fish, I Hull, Andrew Larney and Mark Richards they had a really good days entertainment albeit a tad windy but were entertained by the Osprey and buzzards, and the fact that they had come to Scottish Highlands armed with their binoculars, books and cameras for a wildlife trip and saw more action on a chance night out fishing, this May has been a total disaster with the weather and has mucked up everything regarding plans we have stocked 4 times and are now embarrassed with the amount of fish in the loch, we have been unable to do anything about the weeds until a few days ago because of the high winds, but have now got it sorted, our income due to the winds has dropped considerably and we keep hoping like other fisheries for better days and more settled weather, one good point however is that we have had a much higher amount of beginners turn up, just to give fishing a try, usually these beginners come with a friend or relative that fishes and we can supply them with a rod and reel, its been really good and as the fishing’s been pretty good a lot have left with a fish or two, Buckhaven High School fished on Friday past and left with a few, well done to G Wight, who caught and landed a 2.5lb rainbow all on his own, your teachers have the patience of saints, and do you guys proud, your all welcome here anytime, to-day the water is just perfect, and has started to clear, from the beating we have had from the winds, visibility is getting restored to normal and the forecast is good for the rest of the week, hatches are 7am till about 9 -10 and then about 8pm but during the day there is a fair movement all the time especially at the old jetty, best flies at the moment seem to be black buzzers, hares ear, spiders and hoppers especially at night.

Fishing at the Goldenloch this past week has been hampered by the weather, the wind has just been continuous and its never stopped, occasionally there has been short brief spells of a gentler breeze, however the fishing has been pretty good, most if not everyone seems to have caught something, early morning definitely being the time that the fish are most active, mid day especially when quite windy is hard with the evening being just about as good as the morning but not until about 9 pm, there is a fair bit of fly life on the water, with the birds active most of the day, especially the seagulls which are taking emerging stonefly larvae as it transforms on the surface, however the fish are also very interested in these buzzers and take them as the are emerging from deep down, with May drawing to a close it will be interesting to see just how much fly life will be available in the next few months as traditionally this is the time when it should all happen, for the past couple of years its been a bit disappointing with the morning and evening rises not being as prominent as the used to be, however it looks like this year is going to be very different, we already have the makings of fish activity am and pm, we seem to have a massive amount of fly life as well and with good clear water the fish are easily spotted and they can easily spot flies, so lets hope it all falls into place. A very interesting point that should be noted is that already we have had several anglers commenting that they have caught thier fish using dry flies.

Crazy week at the Goldenloch, anglers have been getting unbelievable catches some guys catching at nearly every cast, its been a quietish week for angler numbers, mostly due to the unsettled weather, but the fishing has been pretty amazing, Diawl Bachs and PT Nymphs seem to have been doing the business best, the mornings and evenings are when the fish are most active, mid day till about 6pm depending on the weather can be harder but the fish are generally just that little bit deeper, a lot of newbie’s and beginners to the sport are arriving this year, it is our policy and always has been, not to charge for beginners and first time fishers, however we do expect payment for the fish they catch, and do not expect them to be doing catch and release, as happened yesterday, this week has also seen some pretty amazing fish being caught with quite a few in the 5 to 7 lb mark all fully finned and very fit, anglers on Saturday were entertained by a very loud disco and youths on bouncy castles etc but seemingly it did not deter the fishing as everyone said they had enjoyed the entertainment.

Fishing at the Goldenloch has stepped up a gear during the last week, anglers have enjoyed some pretty good fishing, however for the last few weeks anglers have been catching fish in one area of the loch and because of the changing cold east wind the fish have been reluctant to move from that particular area, the much warmer weather of the last few days has seen a big change in their movements and the fish are pretty well spread all over, some anglers have done exceptionally well at the furthest end of the loch next to the tall reeds, but undoubtedly the best anglers this week has to have been the three Ospreys that are coming daily for their breakfast, lunch and tea, so far in the last week alone, I would estimate that they have either killed maimed or removed at least 30 fish and that’s only the start of them coming this year, I would advise any anglers visiting that are going to be in a boat to bring a good camera, as I am sure a short video of them trying to remove a large fish would sell well, three times so far this year we have witnessed one of these birds being pulled under by fish, and fighting with it then watched as they cannot take off from the water and it then abandons its catch, yep and every time no one has a camera, twice I had left mine in the forklift and someone else was using it, the heavy rain over the weekend was welcomed and has gone a lone way to clearing the water, the fishing generally has been pretty good with some really nice catches and some really fit brownies are getting caught, this coming Saturday the loch will still be open for fishing, however it is my daughters birthday and we are using the field and facilities at the loch side so a fair bit of noise should be expected, do not expect a quiet tranquil days fishing.
