Goldenloch december 05/12/2011

Well, the first week in December at the Goldenloch has probably been the quietest for a long time, mostly due to the weather, however both Saturday and Sunday were nice days, albeit maybe a tad cold, the cormorants are being a bit troublesome with four or five arriving every morning SNH have declined me a Licence to shoot any, on the grounds that, and I quote “On the basis of our own assessment and advice received we feel that there is a lack of information provided” but I gave them the numbers visiting and their regularity, also it goes on to say “SNH can only grant a licence if we have evidence to show that serious damage is being inflicted on a fishery” so marked fish and eaten fish obviously isn’t enough or is it that they just want me to fill in the questions asked in the booklet they sent headed “Licensing Arrangements for Shooting Birds to Prevent Serious Damage to Fisheries” Its basically due to the fact that complete and utter twats are running this country, we have very little wild bird life left in this beautiful part of North East Fife due to the dummies that are in charge, yes we have a dozen or so Buzzards, three or four Sea Eagles, loads of Cormorants Crows and Jackdaws, but what happened to every thing else we used to have, masses of Robins, Sparrows, Blackbirds, Blue tits, Chaffinch to name a few and our bird feeder is like an abandoned cold war relic, my Father and Mother, both deceased now spent every day in their retirement feeding the wildlife so much so that when visiting them it was like trying to get into a birdcage, they got so much pleasure from doing so, one of my fathers favourite sayings was, “It’s a gie poor man that canny feed the wee birds,” but now that the Government do gooders have reintroduced the top of the tree birds of prey, which basically have eaten everything or scared it away, why what possible good is it doing and who wants Sea Eagles, Buzzards, Cormorants, before set aside and field margins we had a balanced nature with an eco system that worked now we have a very unbalanced system with predators bigger and stronger than ever, due to the huge amount of easy food and no one controlling them, I have lived here all my life and see ruin in many forms, but now it’s a real tragedy.

Goldenloch november 28/11/2011

Forecaster predicted gale force winds and extremely heavy rain all weekend with weather and flood warnings posted everywhere, Friday night and Saturday were the worst, but it had all petered out by 3 in the afternoon, however Sunday was positively calm and gave near perfect conditions for fishing, total anglers for the weekend were 2, with Alan Gibson, Bridge of Earn, catching 5 using nymphs, Sam Angus, Perth was fishing for a few hours yesterday and asks that if anyone has seen a olive sage rod case to please hand it in as it was left by accident. This winter it is my intention to erect a pole at the far end of the loch, on the opposite side from the old buckie hut, the purpose of this pole is for an Osprey or bird perch, it will have a platform as well as a strong perch in place for birds to sit on, now that we seem to have quite a few visiting in the summer it seems the best thing to do is fit up this pole, is remarkable how many anglers are interested in wildlife especially birds so hopefully this will allow them to get a few good pictures.

Goldenloch november 21/11/2011

At the Goldenloch this past week it’s been amazingly warm some days but bitter cold some nights with the effect that it has driven the fish down into the deeper waters, what is happening is that the fish aren’t really starting to rise or be active till late afternoon, It also seems that on some days especially if we have visiting cormorants, the fish are really quite close to the sides, bourne out by the fact that some lads fishing from the banks have had some pretty good catches, this year I have again applied for a licence to shoot these cormorants, at the moment all I am allowed to do is fire to scare, but they are so wary, that after a few days of taking pot shots, now as soon as I get in the car and drive down to the loch they are off, if I get my licence soon if any one wants cormorant feathers please email me or phone, the Burns brothers Ian and Jim arrived late on Sunday did well catching 10 using a cormorant fly also Dave Stewart Newburgh using nymphs had 9, Alec Burns, Kirkcaldy, fishing since early morning had 3, First time visiting us was I Don and A Downie, with a slow start to their day and then eventually finding the right fly and where the fish were, they went on to catch quite a few using diawl bachs and a yellow blob, both commenting how much they had enjoyed the quietness and surroundings probably due to the fact that they had the loch to themselves all day, this morning Monday 21st the water is flat calm and at 7.15 there were fish rising all along the long bank and in the boat area, so we will just have to wait and see how to-day pans out.

Again the weather forecasters got it completely wrong with them stating quite categorically that we would have dry windy weather this last week, it rained every day I know as I had to empty the boats, but what they didn’t guess right was that it was going to be so warm, Monday to Friday was positively mild and it encouraged the fish to rise in the water and feed, it was a pleasant sight to see them again, with three of the supposedly windy days flat calm anglers were treated to some nice pickings, and it would be fair to say that as sport fishing goes with the conditions and feeding available anglers were treated to some real classic fishing Hamish Anderson and his brother James from Linlithgow had a great day with 12 between them all returned all on home tied dry flies, both lads commenting that the fishing wasn’t easy but really good as when the fish showed they interested in a particular fly they were committed to that pattern and colour, Saturday was a good day with almost everyone getting fish the boys from the ferry fly dressers had a good day as did Jim Howison, Tayport who using size 14 diawl bachs, had 11, in about an hour, Jim himself was amazed as the most he has ever caught in 10 years fishing was six, and that was at Geordies pond which he admits isn’t a big place to fish, he did say that it was pretty obvious that the fish were in a Scholl, as he with his polarised glasses could see them in front of the jetty, he just kept casting right into the middle of them and waited for a good pull, being a good sport he moved and told a father and son where to go and they also had a few.

Goldenloch november 07/11/2011

At the Goldenloch the first few days of November were amazing, probably warmer than some of the days in August, and the fishing on those days was excellent with some lads getting really big catches and some big fish, Allan Fraser, Dundee had 8, C & R using dry flies and buzzers while his boat partner Sandy had a cracker at 11 lbs and put back 5, however Friday night saw 2 degrees of frost and a heavy rhyme over the loch, this having the effect of putting the fish deep down on Saturday making the fishing much harder and things didn’t really pick up till late in the day, as it took a while for the water to warm up, Don Stewart Glasgow and John Grey Auchtermuchty were the only ones late enough to get the benefit catching 5 each, Sunday was more or less a carbon copy of Saturday and with only a couple of fish caught by 10am things were not looking so good however as the day progressed, the fish started to move and most that were still fishing left with a couple of fish, Hamish Anderson from Stonehaven arrived late and fished for about an hour catching 3 using Diawl Bachs, fishing is very unpredictable at this time of year and for those that persevere it can be very rewarding as the water in the loch drops in temperature, the fish have to re acclimatise themselves to the much colder environment, and it is definitely more apparent that they rise to the warmer surface water later in the day, probably just to find any food that is about.
