Thursday, Friday Saturday and Sunday were really hot, I was not really expecting to be very busy at the fishery, but it turned out alright, the campers went a long way to helping, they had a great time with fish rising all night and they eventually went to bed at 6 am, I have been busy at the weeds which to be honest weren’t that bad and the weed I have missed is providing vital shade to the fish, there have been a few fish that have succumbed to handling, and bird strikes, after inspection it would seem that we have, Saprolegnia which causes white, cream or pale brown cotton wool-like growths on the skin and fins of fish. These infections often start as small round patches but can increase in size to form larger plaques covering the body. Although Saprolegnia is commonly referred to as a fungus, it is actually a type of cold-water mould known as an Oomycete and is not strictly a fungus. The most common species that causes problems in our fisheries is Saprolegnia parasitica, which is found in freshwater environments throughout the UK. It may not be that however and only a few fish are involved, best to kill and remove from the water, other than that the water is in great condition the fishing is difficult just now I suspect due to the high temperatures, especially for those that do not have a good fly selection, it would seem that nearly all the fish being caught this week were on dry flies, wets lures bungs etc just not cutting it, Rod Thaw 20 + and 11 perch on hoppers crunchers etc, John Bashford 6 + 8 perch, Sandy Band 3 on hoppers, The Perth Well Being Group, Lizzy had 3 plus a perch, Lloyd 8, George 1, Martin 1, Ciaran later had a good sized trout on an Adams Parachute, Callum Ford and Charles Bru had 4 on dry flies, John Bowman on Tuesday 9 rainbow 1 brownie and 5 Perch, John Basford 3, Dave Nicol had 2 bows, fishing with Mark Chesser 5 bows + 1 perch, Darin Taylor having a great day 14 trout but caught 7 perch and Harry on 1 trout and 19 perch, George Duff last Sunday had 7 rainbows all on dry flies, Bob Cowie on 1 and John on 8, in all its been a good week considering the tempreatures.
