Every day for the last few weeks, the bright burning hot sky, I suppose it was inevitable this year that the water was going to go green, with the onset of an algal bloom, algae is a symptom of the intense sunshine that we have been getting, the recent rain last week mobilised the fertiliser that was on the fields, that caused a runoff into the loch, the result was a rapid increase of the population of algae cells, that are always present in the loch, an Algal bloom was the result, now here is the bit to understand, the algae at this stage is very susceptible to the effects of sunlight and temperature, but the evil part of algae is, it stops sunlight from reaching the bottom of the loch thus preventing the plants from producing o2, fish are in no way bothered by algae or an algal bloom, but they bothered by low oxygen levels, there are ways to aerate water, which are effective but can be expensive, the best way is by nature i.e. the plants, the fish here just now are super fit, there are a couple cruising around the surface which look like they are struggling for breath, however on attempting to net same, they are very hard to catch and are darting about but unable to dive an indication that they are struggling with air in there swim bladders, I am in no way concerned about the fish welfare, as anglers comments are that they are super strong, returning to swim energetically after being released, what I would ask is that anglers try as much as possible to keep the caught fish up high in the water, thus avoiding the fish diving into the weed, on a nicer point yesterday Rod Thaw and myself spotted a newly hatched MayFly in a spinner phase , now this is exciting, as we have seen them before but very limited they are extremely rare in Scotland, I have posted a picture of the life cycle of the mayfly for all to see, it’s a great thing to have and the fish love to eat them.
