What could I say about the past 3 of 4 days that would genuinely describe how the fishing is here just now, I mean the water is in pretty good condition, especially since three weeks ago with all the wind, rain it was tainted green, now it is gin clear in 80% of the loch, weed is nowhere to be seen excepting for a wee bit round the side edges, Oxygen levels are high in all areas, swallows, swifts and sand martins feeding on hatching flies, four Osprey attending almost 3 to 4 times daily, ( I allow for this in my stocking policy) no cormorants since Monday past, a big thank you to Jim at Parkview, between us we have survived the winter, suffering with spring attacks admirably, the numbers this year are easily double that of other years, My latest stocking arrived last week, with some really special fish, Spanish breed Steelheads trout, these fish are the closest relative to rainbow trout, they are classified as the same species { Oncorhynchus mykiss} [ Rainbow trout and steelhead are ray-finned fishes in the salmon family, and they are one of the top sport fish in North America. Rainbow trout and steelhead are the same species, but they have different lifestyles. Steelhead are anadromous—meaning they spend part of their lives in the sea before going to rivers to breed ], however there are some other notable differences, they have a much pinker flesh, some say they taste much better than rainbow which can taste earthy, they are also completely silver, it has also been noted that they grow much quicker, plus they give a much stronger account for themselves, much better than rainbows, just something a little different in the loch for anglers to fish for, a hard spring this year for fishing, yet we have so far had 7 complete beginners, a few more in waiting, out of the ones taught, there have been some success in there ability to catch fish, only this week two of the lads had on an evening session two fish each which is pretty good going, but the fishing is amazing just now, fish to be seen all day and there is also fish feeding on black and green flies, the loch has also got a fair bit of tadpoles and other invertebrate’s showing the usual lads are all having a ball, Rod and Davie again having there best day ever, pictures to-day are by John McRobbie, local wildlife photographer.
