Different Fisheries have a very different way of looking at the way they stock fish and how they approach the market that they cater for, in some instances it is very much stocking for a numbers game, both in size and amounts available to be caught, some places have nets and tanks holding fresh fish, which deliberately up the amount of fish caught when they are put in the water, these fisheries do a very good job at running a place that demands high return results, so that’s one type of fishery, it looks after the guests and caters for their needs, there is another side to this however, which is a much more old fashioned way, its what we try and supply to our clients at the Goldenloch, it is fishing to catch trout that are more akin to wild fish ( which are normally pretty hard to catch, as getting to a water that has them is almost impossible), what can be done however is to find a water that support sport fishing, the quality of fish in a fishery can be affected quite dramatically if the stocking is too high, or perhaps there is too much catch and release, this never used to be a problem until a few years ago, then it was only a slight problem, but now it is much more obvious in some situations, the way we deal with our stocking is that we work out what we think our fish losses were in the previous months from the end of October, allowing us to questimate the number of fish that we have, why then, well that’s when we stop stocking in order that the fish in the loch can manage to survive on the natural food source that is on the loch floor, (this food source is due to colder weather, depleting quickly due to the heavy rains and cold water) to keep stocking would see the food source completely die off, this would effectively end the natural cycle that exists in nearly every still water, hence the reason many fisheries have to stock so much, never the less our hard fighting, healthy fish are a joy to fish for, especially when they are atune to certain flies, Rod Thaw a regular had a bumper day on Saturday past with a great number of fish returned and all hard fighting, Rod knows the water and what flies work best for him, he enjoys his fishing, he works hard at it to make it work for him, that’s what its all about having a great day.
