At The Goldenloch the overflow is now running at a near constant, at the minimum water level, the weeds seeds / plantlets that normally plague the grids have nearly stopped choking the grids, as the water temperature is much colder, but in the loch the weed is still growing, but much slower, this is the time of year that Argulus, normally shows on the fish, true to form it’s still there, it is thankfully a very light infestation, a damnation that was brought into Scottish fisheries in the 70s, it caused so much harm and chaos in some fisheries, causing many of them to close, Sandyknowes in Bridge of Earn being one of the first, however management of small still waters has moved on quite dramatically since then, but this latest past season has pretty much produced the perfect storm as far as Argulus is concerned, the hot weather in June till August, allowed the eggs that were laid on boulders / stones to hatch, hence the reason we removed all the smooth boulders lying in the shallows where the Argulus breed , we also put down every year some traps, these are square PVC downpipes at 2 meters long, are cheap to buy, we connect them to floats and distribute around the perimeter of the loch in the shallows, it used to be that corrugated plastic sheets were used but definitely the down pipes are the best, we gather them in usually Dec / Jan / Feb and allow them to dry out as that will kill of the eggs, another thing we do at this time of year is make sure we have bales of Barley straw in the loch, the rotting straw produces an enzyme that somehow kills of the nasty Blanketweed Algae, this stuff breeds like nothing you have ever seen, the spores just multiply, very easy to get rid off if done at the right time, the fishing just now when its not being affected with the weather is really getting some great catches, George Duff today just couldn’t stop smiling everything he caught was on Hoppers.
