“The Goldenloch” 10/04/2022, Fishery Blog, April, Week 15.
Nature, we all take it for granted, however it is the single most important thing that affects our lifestyles and our lives, whether it is climate, wind, rain, sun, heat, cold, the plants, the things we use to heat our homes, run our cars, our food and of course the birds and animals that share our space that we need to go about in our daily routines, our way of adapting to and the way we treat nature is changing and its changing a lot, it needs to, I have farmed and lived in the countryside all my life, growing up in two very fortunate places, as a child in Windygates nr Leven until I was 8, then here at Berryhill nr Newburgh for 61 years, farming for 30 years until ill-health got the better of me but in that time I also had the “Goldenloch” to care for, running a fishery is a bit like being a School Janitor I would imagine, picking up the rubbish, making sure everything is in place, so as those wishing to attend have everything they want to achieve a successful day, however like the janitor there is no way of controlling the weather, the fishing has been dramatically affected by he low temperatures, the bitter wind from the North, Nature also controls the fish and they don’t wish to come to the surface either, but the birds haven’t arrived this year, the sand Martins, the swallows, the swifts, no insects hatching sees zero birds coming to feed on the water, we have 3 Ospreys coming virtually every day but they are fish eating Birds of Prey, ( A raptor by all accounts ) fisheries would quite easily like to see them go elsewhere, but a loch that is well stocked is easy pickings, the birds are a huge pleasure to see and hear would life be a huge boar without Barn Owl, bearded tit, blackbird, blackcap, black headed gull, blue tit, brambling, Bullfinch, Buzzard, Canada goose, Carrion Crow, chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Coal tit, collared dove, Cormorant, Cuckoo, Dipper, Dunnock, Eagle Owl, Fieldfare, French partridge, Goldcrest, Goldeneye, Goldfinch, Goosander, Great black backed gull, great crested grebe, great spotted woodpecker, great tit, Greenfinch, green woodpecker, grey wagtail, Greylag goose, Heron, Herring gull, Hooded Crow, house martin, House sparrow, Jackdaw, Jay, Kestrel, Kingfisher, Little grebe, long tailed tit, magpie, mallard, Marsh harrier, mistle thrush, mute swan, Osprey, Oystercatcher, Partridge, Peregrine falcon, Pheasant, pied flycatcher, pied wagtail, pink footed goose, raven, Redpoll, Redwing, Reed Bunting, Robin, rock dove, rook, sand martin, Sea Eagle, sedge warbler, Shelduck, Siskin, Skylark, song thrush, Sparrowhawk, Starling, Swallow, Swift, Tawny owl, Teal, Tree creeper, Tree sparrow, Tufted duck, turtle dove, Waxwing, Whitethroat, whooper swan, willow warbler, Wood Pigeon, Woodcock, Wren, Yellowhammer a list that just expands.
