“The Goldenloch”
28-11-2021, Fishery Blog, Week 48.
The past few days saw a huge storm, {which for us wasn’t that bad, nothing as bad as predicted, it seems to have hit the East coast worst}, what it did do was drive the cormorants from the Tay Estuary inland, I would imagine that some fisheries have been getting hammered, yesterday I past Lindores Loch, and noticed several on the water, however I have been keeping them off the water hear, occasionally there has been a few on the loch but a shot over there heads soon sees them off, I have a licence to shoot cormorants from the governing body, Nature.Scot, but, being honest I try not to kill them, over the years I have shot so many birds, OK mostly game birds, shooting natural birds just doesn’t feel right, nor necessary, however they do a lot of damage to the fish stock, 1 cormorant could easily kill 3 to 4 trout every day, but they can injure so many more, the numbers of cormorants is much higher than it used to be, even 5, 6 years ago, to-day it’s a flat calm and with an overnight frost, we awoke to our first frozen loch of the winter 2021, it’s the 28th of November, traditionally the accounting year end, a time when all the bookwork had to be finished off and handed in to the accountants, this is my first time in 50 years were I don’t have to do this, basically due to my health, I have wound up my other interests, the fishery year end is in May / April so that can wait, I enjoy just having the fishery, have done for the past, (Too many to count ) years, but will soon hand it over to my son and his wife, once the lawyer gets round to doing it, fly fishing has changed so much lately, I have tried hard to make my fishery unique, we have been really lucky in that we have a massive amount of natural trout food, and an environment that allows the fish to blossom, growing into hard fighting trout, anglers enjoy the catch, but it is disappointing to see the way fly fishing has developed, yes there are still guys that love to make their own flies (traditional flies and true imitations of natural insects) and fish to catch on them, however there are so many guys now using egg flies, squiggles, blobs, whatsits, a lot of these guys cant really catch fish using normal dry and wet flies, but with the modern stuff that’s available, they now are easily catching a serious amount of fish, we have resisted this for years but in the interests of financial viability, we are accepting this as the way forward, some lads are now regularly catching 20+ trout, but there is room for both, the pleasure is in going fishing for a day and that is paramount, that should never change, we have resisted competitions and clubs in the past years but the new ownership may change that.
Fly Fishing is a Pastime, it is not only relaxing, but also rewarding, both mentally and physically, come to the “Goldenloch” enjoy your Hobby to the max, no stress, only tranquil surroundings abundant wildlife, great fish, Brown, Blues and Rainbows, you will not be disappointed.
