“The Goldenloch”
12-September-2021, Fishery Blog, Week 37.
Still haven’t had any big wind, which would help the loch, but the fishing has improved dramatically, catches are brilliant, it really started last weekend with guys catching all over, the water is now back clear, nice and black, water temperature is steady at 16.9 degrees , Somebody asked what does Secchi mean (Secchi disk as created in 1865 by Angelo Secchi, is a plain white, circular disk 30 cm (12 in) in diameter used to measure water transparency ) it is ideal for fisheries, what’s happening in the loch just now, is that there are thousands of young perch that the bigger trout are feeding on, some serious fry bashing, the brownies of which there are again hundreds (we put them in some 6/7 years ago with one load being Diploids) also producing baby fry, they are coming out from the wildlife end of the loch which anglers have no fishing access too, with plenty for the fish to feed on they are growing well and are in great condition, this means that they are putting up a great fight, everyone fishing have commented that the scrap presented to them by the fish is phenomenal;- while fishing, safety on the water is, and should be a major issue , lifejackets are available for all, (including youngsters, another 6 new junior jackets this year) however simple things, like remaining seated while fishing, not siting close to each other, our boats are longer than most others, therefore are more suited to two anglers fishing, children under 16 must wear eye protection and a life vest, and preferably a head covering, coming to the “Goldenloch” is easy, we are open all year, every day, early 6am till late 11pm, tuition is available, in the form of a buddy or by a professional, this week a dad with two boys arrived, taking one at a time in a boat, he was giving them fishing lessons, one caught 3 the other 4 or 5, all with no charge, as we do not charge for youngsters, as many will vouch for, fishing is for fun especially Fly Fishing, if taught properly then the youngster will be hooked for life, as is the case with another young lad that hooked 3, sadly he lost them, but the thrill was in the catching, especially with the fly that was used, Les and Wayne turned up today, Sunday, and had I believe a stormer of a day, well done boys, last week I was beginning to think I was needing to stock, but it was just the weather making the fish in the doldrums, coupled with the ultra-bright sunshine, fishing was harder, most of the anglers fishing here are using traditional flies, plus buzzers and small lures, guys using blobs are becoming more frequent but personally I still hate to see snakes, boobies and egg flies, if they are killing to keep that’s fine, but anyone using these and catching loads of fish returning them, will be asked to change tactics or leave, financially its like this catching 10 fish is approx. £50 catching 20 fish is £100, these fish are my stock my way of making an income, badly injured or damaged fish my die or most certainly loose condition so it is important to use barbless hooks, what I am saying is the same for all fisheries. Please then stick to the simple rules, which are, if you are catching loads in one spot after 9 fish move and let someone else onto the area where you are, if someone is fishing from the bank the boats must remove themselves into the loch, barbless flies, all this helps to make for better fishing and relaxation.
Fly Fishing is a Pastime, it is not only relaxing, but also rewarding, both mentally and physically, come to the “Goldenloch” enjoy your Hobby to the max, no stress, only tranquil surroundings abundant wildlife, great fish, Brown, Blues and Rainbows, you will not be disappointed.
