“The Goldenloch”
23-May-2021, Fishery Blog, Week 21.
Near the end of May and its still very cold, however thankfully the fish are beginning to be much more active, normally at this time of year we would have expected to see fly hatches at regular times, with fish correspondently chasing those flies, but that is just not happening yet, its just to damned cold, newly stocked fish are however looking for grub, usually near the margins, but older settled fish are getting plenty to eat in the weeds and loch floor, then they are swimming about as they look for an opportunistic nibble, its them that are giving anglers some fun, but it is nothing more than nibbles or soft takes, this is the year for lost fish, fish that haven’t quite connected with a fly, Serious fly fishing just hasn’t quite managed to get going yet as anglers struggle to entice fish with dry flies Saturday saw Huff and Puff fishing all day on dries with Puff getting 5 and losing 8 and Huff on zero, Ali from Kirkcaldy using totally different style and flies had 6 returned and successfully managed a fine healthy brown trout which he was after for his tea, Others on dry flies have done well this passed week, the water quality has improved a lot after a huge hiccup with blanket weed which is a healthy form of algae it grows well in natural waters, it is the silky grey light yellow stuff that tadpoles live in, what happens with it is that given the right conditions it spreads at an amazing rate of knots covering the loch bottom, the major plus here is it tends to grow in cold water and is triggered by bright sunlight, it blocks and kills out other weed species, plus it uses up nutrients like Nitrogen and Phosphate converting them into cells, then the amazing part it floats to the surface, this year it all happened in one day and by me removing it I have got rid of a huge amount of potential green algae problems I hope, we shall wait and see, however what we have just now is ging clear water.
