“The Goldenloch”
January-31-01-2021, Fishery Blog, Week 05.
Week 5, still very cold, the birds are really struggling just now, as the free water i.e. puddles, burns, lochs etc are all frozen, I have been breaking ice around the loch sides more so the swans have somewhere to move about in, does anyone know what type of pellets I can feed them with, I see that they are coming ashore and eating the grass, but its pretty poor quality at the moment, in the early mornings I can see if we have a fresh snowfall, lots of tracks, so I think at the far end on the hill side, Huff and Puffs favourite place, which they will be pleased to know has undergone some constructive weed clearance, we have Fox, rabbits, perhaps rats, and perhaps squirrel, on the other side of the loch it could be an otter, lots of birds, such as ducks, coots, etc, masses of tracks across the loch, with no idea what they are, but I will put down the cameras to see what I can catch pictures off, the ice on the loch remains, without much sign of shifting currently at the moment, we have an average of 3 inches across 80%, what I will say is that my Grandchildren completely fed up being inside home schooling just love to get out onto the ice, albeit with supervision and only at the sides, however the plans for doing anything at the fishery are all on hold due to the poor weather, plus the pandemic being the way it is, things do change and perhaps some warmer weather may come soon, but at the moment all the boats need washed and floors painted. Last week whilst at the far end of the loch the ice is crystal clear you could see the fish under the ice, quite impressive sizes as it would seem that the ice magnified the fish a bit like holding a fish closer to the camera.
