“The Goldenloch”
November-02-2020-Week-43
The biggest single thing that has a major effect on going fly fishing has got to be the weather, yep the water conditions often get the blame, to weedy, to murky, green, to hot, anything but the anglers ability, now this year has seen more water fall than any other that I can remember, this is the first time ever that the main overflow has ran everyday since early August, before that time we had a fair bit of weed, but I was happy with that, because the water quality was outstanding, biggest problem was the anglers were getting stuck in the weeds as that’s where the fish were, but what I am trying to say is that this is the first year ever that the water level has been so full and constantly being renewed, we had a massive fall of rain the last week of July and pretty much since then a really heavy rain every two or three weeks, once or twice we have had murky water due to all the crud getting stirred up, however all this water has made for really excellent conditions and the wildlife has benefited fantastic as well, it started with the biggest ever tadpole hatch followed obviously with millions of frogs everywhere, ducklings and baby coots, our perch that was introduced back in 2018 seem to have made fast work of the young sticklebacks, I was trapping them during the lockdown period, but getting nothing like the year before, in the water the pee muscle has distributed itself over the whole loch and hangs onto the weeds forming muscle beds which the fish feed on. Translucent light blue freshwater shrimp are in abundance as is boatman beetles and damsel fly larvae nymphs which have a field day on the young tadpoles and shrimps, its just a melee of food and the fish thrive on it, this winter if it dries a bit I shall be working on my next small woodland area, basically planting all the trees that have been generously given, if anybody has any flowering shrub getting pulled out bring it along to the new woodland, Yara’s Hillock, next year I am hoping to have the new lodge up and running so that will be a game changer for us, but the loch is looking great just now, best of all everyone has enjoyed there visits with us, calendar’s soon to be available just tell me if you want one.
