“The Goldenloch”
October-12th-2020-Week-40
Fly Fishing is a sport that can now be enjoyed by many folks from all walks of life, it didn’t always be like that and I personally have over the years seen so many changes, I first became involved as a boy in going fishing with my dad, flies were bought over the phone from Dickson’s the Gun Shop, in Edinburgh and Malloch’s in Perth, with dad describing what he wanted from them, being ready for the next weeks adventure, arriving by post, they were expensive, however these flies mostly resembled something that could be found naturally, or at most were made to look like flies, it was in the 1970s/80s that the whole fly fishing thing took off, the miners strike saw many lads take up fishing, some to find something to do, catching some free food, also the oil industry back then saw lads with big wages, needing a hobby on their two or three weeks onshore, for what ever reason the economy was buoyant, many different types of people started to go fly fishing, very quickly the real enthusiasts started tying flies and the magazines of that era picked up on this, offering tips and supplies, we opened our fishery to the public in the autumn of 1985, Joe Kilca, a polish lad from the star of Markinch used to arrive on his moped twice a week, very quickly we soon had a solid client list, ( My mum and dad ran the fishery then, however it very quickly became to much for them ) the natural head of fish started to become depleted and fish were bought from various suppliers Robin Ridley, Ayrshire, being the best at that time, Lindores Loch was supplying fish that were bought in Yorkshire, they were purchased by the ton, this worked out about 2000 fish at a time, Loch Fitty, and others participated with this, however we stuck with our supplier, we believed then that anglers wanted quality fish, the Yorkshire fish were long and very dark in colour and became known locally as rubber torches, but the fisheries that bought them blossomed, becoming very popular, to get on them you had to book a year in advance, they were massively overstocked and were fished to the max, they became destroyed by their own success, Catch and Release became the normal, as the fish became spiked and handled, the ability to catch became harder, enter the Oaky Dokey a fly invented in Fife and it revolutionised fly fishing, my Dad when he started the Goldenloch said that it was always to be a Fly Fishing Loch, we have always bought the highest quality fish we could source, his remit was and still is “That fly fishing is for fun and Pleasure” we stick by that rule to this day.
