“The Goldenloch”
August-17th-2020-Week-32
Got that one wrong last week big style, a week without rain, then we had the mother of all storms, thunder, lightning, downpours, I missed the whole thing as a hard day pulling weeds, preceded that evening, and after a hot bath I fell asleep, only to wake at 6am to heavy rain on our Velux window, later after breakfast on going down to the loch, Holly Molly, the overflow was running full pelt, the boats were full of water, this week the fishing is extremely varied and I don’t know why, some days, with some guys having amazing fishing, for others its been really poor, lots and lots of fish to be seen, I did have a very interesting chat with my friend Andrew, who is 96 this year, a retired entomologist and retired teacher/ professor of marine biology, his speciality being rainbow trout’s habitats, so he is a goldmine of information, firstly on examination of the water his comment was that because Rainbows and Blue trout are such ferocious eaters, the amount of available food in the water, the density of it, (substance) would very quickly fill the bellies, he doubted that the fish would move far from the food supply, coupled with bright sunshine, high water temperature, the ability to catch fish is easily limited, but we do have fish being caught on dry flies just now, that is down to, he thinks the older more natural acclimatised fish, they are more selective in what they eat, our fortunate situation is that the loch is not overly deep, is very rich in protein over 100% of the area, deep lochs are also struggling this and last year, he reckons due to fish staying in the cool, darker water, they just don’t eat preferring the shade and possibly picking up bloodworms etc, exceptions are newly stocked places, which only lasts for a few days, But all that is not new and hence the anglers know that this time of year is hard work, anyplace that has fish being caught just now would most likely have a large burn or river flowing through it or shaded with lots of woodland, recently nobody could miss a fair bit of social media discussion about the time that anglers are allocating themselves to fish, here we do not ask lads to leave, they will have a reason to stay, our tickets are £15 C & R ½ day, or £20 all day with the right to kill 2 fish, or fish C & R, its so simple and it works well, not for a long time have I ever had words with an angler over how long they can fish, I guarantee 100 % that not one angler will dispute that, also if someone gets called away (phone call etc) or whether conditions are bad they are welcome to come and finish the session they started, yep I have had difference of opinions with some guys, I used to try and ban some types of flies, but now I don’t, as I find guys really don’t use snakes or wotsits here, however I am reasonable but do get angered by repeat offenders, Trawling, using electric outboards to trawl and other stupid things like that, I have asked guys to leave people for these offences, I have never ever heard of other fisheries being strict, it may be that guys don’t misbehave on there patches, only a couple of weeks ago we caught a lad using a flicker with the spade removed, he was asked to go, so there is and always will be lads that try to get away with pushing boundaries, but be warned my pet hate is guys watching a trailing line behind a boat with an electric outboard.
