“The Goldenloch”
January 06th-2020-Week 1
It is nice to get to this side of Christmas and New Year, I trust everyone has enjoyed the festivities, as we are open all year and pretty much every day, this year it was pleasant and surprising just how many anglers needed or wanted to come and relax over the festive period, a few just needed a few hours (no charge), one chap on Christmas day, had his rod and gear, but he never actually fished, on speaking with him, it transpired his wife’s family were here from Germany, not being able to speak or even understand, it was nicer to sit in tranquillity at the side of the loch, the huge laugh was, my house was full to bursting, I was enjoying being beside him.
So how is the Fishing, well it much better in the afternoons than the mornings, we recently have had three weeks of very low air pressure ( now lifted) which also made the fishing a bit slow, this coupled with a massive amount of rain kept the fish down, however since the 1st of January it has improved a lot, and correspondingly the fishing has been pretty good, good catches are being had, using, what you would expect at this time of year on yellow dancers, consett budgies, also cormorant flies, bungs and blobs still doing well, but to be honest more lads preferring to use flies with a small beads on, so as to get down three or four feet, it has been noted that the water is full actually moving with shrimp, pee mussels and snails and a lot of other small invertebrates, Rod Thaw had a particularly good catch on Saturday with a fish at a guess 14>15 lbs, a massive fight and the fear of braking his rod but with skill he landed same, this in his catch of 14 all returned, also after a long absence, but nice to see both B Dewar and A Burns here, their fishing day cut short by atrocious weather but both lads having a good mornings fishing. It was also a great day for Neil Christie, so this is the start or nearly the start of season 3 for Neil, I have been keen for Neil to fish other places so as he sees and gets the feel of how others do Fly Fishing, and he has been to lots of places, however it is very gratifying that he comes here weekly as this is where he says he enjoys the most, well this week he caught 7 fish with one a cracking 2lb Brown trout, all returned, his best day yet and he only fished for 5 hours, come March we will be increasing our kill ticket prices, Catch and Release will remain the same, season tickets are all sold out, as is the ones we do on a special buy 5 get 6, next year they to will go up in price, It is 2010 since we last put our prices up, so that’s been a pretty good deal for anglers, and I still remember one guy then who argued with me that we were outragesly expensive as we charged £15 for a two fish limit (to him that was &7.50 / fish) he refused to consider the session was 6 hours, a boat was included, free coffee or tea, mains water toilet, mains electricity, insurance so he stormed off never to come back, which is sad as I never like these sort of arguments everyone deserves a break and its good to forgive. Enough said.
