“Goldenloch”
July-07th – 2019, Week 25
With the “Goldenloch”, a lot seems to be happening , water clarity has improved, our system of purging and oxygenating is very effective and the fish seem to love it as well, however the stickle back situation has totally run away with its self, so now is the time to go visit Andrew, at 93 he doesn’t visit here often anymore, a retired entomologist and very mush an expert in all things ponds, he used to come here often studying the insects and flora, it was him who taught me about one valve ( pond snails, limpets, freshwater winkles)and two valve molluscs (Freshwater Mussels, pea and Orb shells) with and without shells, (leeches, worms, midge larvae etc) my task with him was to find out about Sticklebacks, boy was there a lot to learn, they are one of the worlds most ancient species and can adapt to living anywhere and more or less in any water conditions, they particularly thrive in natural healthy waters and can often be found in reservoirs’, they breed prolifically and trout gorge themselves on the juveniles’, the adult sticklebacks’ grow spines which stop predator fish from eating them, so the population can only explode, sticklebacks themselves eat insects and bloodworms, it has been known that stickle backs can eventually if starved eat algae and they will then die off but this is after everything has been eaten, so we have hatched a plan and it involves a we bit of manufacturing and should I hope see a massive reduction in the stickleback population, so glad we have not got massive bookings as trying to accommodate grumpy anglers is very difficult, but it is pleasant that the guys that are coming even although the fishing is hard are enjoying the day, still the hard summer months aren’t even here yet and some massive water temperature rises can be expected, Andrew did tell me that in the summer of 1947 the same as is happening just now happened then, and it ended with a massive thunderstorm and rain that lasted for weeks.
Fly Fishing is a Pastime, it is not only relaxing, but also rewarding, come to the “Goldenloch” enjoy your Hobby to the max, no stress, only tranquil surroundings abundant wildlife, great fish, Brown, Blues and Rainbows, you will not be disappointed.
