“Goldenloch”
May-19th – 2019, Week 18
We still are having some really unsettled weather, hot bright sunny days, dull cold days and worst of all is the continual twisting wind, but to be honest everyone is still pretty happy, because they are all catching fish, just not in the numbers they expect to catch, however the fish that do get caught are fighting like Billy O, seems like black buzzers and bibios are the favourite just now, but Montana’s are getting more popular, as are some dry flies, yep dry fly fishing is back, more so because of the perseverance of some anglers, desperate for fish to start taking off the surface, these ultra keen and enthusiastic gentlemen just love the challenge, the resulting take, we have had a couple of nights this week where there was a massive rise, but the cool air has stopped it again, so what is happening in the loch, spooned fish are absolutely full, crammed with snails, pee mussels and shrimps, this indicating a lot of bottom feeding, it needs the right conditions to make the larvae and eggs hatch on the loch floor resulting in a proper feeding rise, many people mistake fish that are foraging on the surface as feeding fish, but real die hard anglers no the difference of a proper rise, last week the loch was swarming with swallows, swifts and sand martins, accompanied by unimaginable amount of bats, there were fish everywhere as far as one could see, a spectacle that is just pure magic, and sometimes if the angler or anglers have the right dry fly on an amazing catch is to be had, back to reality and catches this week have been as follows, Ian Brown and Tom Duguid 2 each for the pot, pretty good considering their age and the wind when they were fishing, Sandy Band 4 on Montana’s and buzzers, A Drummond 5 again in wind, Lewis had 12 using a butcher. L Gunn 6 all returned, Harry Wise 9 all returned, Grant McGregor 6 returned but lost loads, Dave Wilson and Rod Thaw had 18 between them all mostly caught in the late afternoon.
