“Goldenloch”
February- 04th– 2019, Week 5
Twice, in two weeks a complete change in the weather, the ice this week has managed to get to nearly 3 inches in depth, which is quite a lot, last Monday saw Eddie Henderson, Perth fishing from the bank as it was a pretty windy day, and he had a blisteringly successful time, with 9 on a green Montana till it became unusable, then one more on an amber/brown nymph, on the other side of the loch and only fishing for a short while, Harald caught 1 on a Pheasant tailed nymph, the next day saw ice forming quickly as daybreak arrived, by 10 am the loch was covered and with no wind it seemed pointless to go out in a boat, strangely and it may not seem so but there has been very little rainfall in the past 6 weeks or so, OK there has been drizzle and light showers but no significant rain, the overflow from the loch, which is normally raging, at this time of year has now stopped, pools and ponds are empty its just strange, the wildlife has had a real battering these past few weeks, a lot of feathers lying around, some ducks, coots and swans all share the same wee clear area in the loch, the coots have taken to roosting in bushes, never seen that before, the big evil bird that terrorised everything that was flying, seems to have moved on to new pastures, allowing the pigeons and smaller birds back, we had no robins for about a week, funnily enough I have been putting down feeding for the pair of squirrels that have been bobbing about, and they never touched it, then I spied them on Friday when it was snowing they were up at our neighbours helping themselves to their bird feeders and boy were they stuffing there wee faces full, so today Monday sees yet another thaw but it will take a day for the ice to melt and hopefully “Normal service will resume”
