Goldenloch
September -17th – Week-37-2018
So on the Loch or rather in the loch this year we have had some strange things happen, three + years ago our supplier sold us a load of diploid brown trout, to be honest I have until this year never even given it a second thought, all I can remember is that for some reason they had a load in transit, would I take them, obligingly I said yes, Well that decision coupled with us raising the loch level, the really wet season last year, the hot season this year has seen a massive hatch of alevins, these tiny trout, live on the yolk from their egg sacs.) This hatch of tens of thousands has provided some amazing fishing, as the bigger hungrier rainbows devour these little infants, but all is not lost, spotted in the water are some larger, well some 5cm troutlings, its all good, also coming off the loch are fish in the 2 to 3 kilo size (5 to 6 lbs) anglers should be aware that these fish have without a doubt grown to that size naturally, we only stock fish at a kilo, which our records and suppliers will prove, also a trout whether it is brown or rainbow in the wild here in Scotland, will usually only grow naturally to approx 6 lbs, that is because the local environment only allows this, however [Trout are members of the salmon family and therefore can grow relatively large. The biggest rainbow trout ever caught was in Canada in the year 2009. The fish weighed 48 pounds. An average mature trout is around 16 inches in length, and weighs between 2 to 8 pounds.] {The average life span of wild rainbow trout in Virginia waters is very similar to that of brook trout. Maturation begins as early as one year with average survival of three to four years. Maximum known longevity is 11 years but 7 year olds are typically the oldest in most populations} Westmill in Blairgowrie our local suppliers have specialised in producing quality trout over the years and with specialized pellets can achieve some stunning fish, basically by stimulating growth with high protein and oils, these fish are then used as bait to lure anglers to some fisheries, however fishing is about having me time and lads that go fishing generally only have themselves to please, that’s what we here at the “Goldenloch” are trying hard to provide a better environment, this year saw the best in dry fly fishing, the most massive fly hatches, weed beds under control for the benefit of the fish, huge amounts, more than ever pond skaters, beetles, shrimps, snails, pupa, Corixa and nymphs, trees and shrubs growing for the benefit of butterflies, damsels and moths, however we can do more and a new plan is being formed to take us forward hopefully providing the ultimate in natural fishing, Catches this past week pretty much back to normal with some lads having and amazing days fishing.
