Seems like it’s definitely guys that have the right fishing flies who get to catch the fish, so what do I mean by this, well a month ago, the black buzzer was definitely the best method to catch with, buzzers are the pupae of flies, as it rises upwards through the water towards the surface, it grows in size due to the lesser pressure, coming from the egg or bloodworm, its on way to becoming a fly, so this is a buzzer sometimes it is a firm favourite with the trout, these buzzers on reaching the surface then burst open, relishing the encased fly, which spreads it new wings into the sunshine to dry before attempting to fly, whilst all this is happening, this new life “the fly” is at the mercy of not only the trout but also the hovering birds, in fact birds are the flies main enemy, but that’s been this way for eons, but evolution did change the buzzer, how, well some strains or types of flies start to hatch before they reach the surface, as the water pressure drops, the flies wings start pushing their way out the buzzer shell, this is known in the angling world as a suspender buzzer, or shuttle cock, which basically means a fly that’s hatching out of the buzzer shell before it reaches the surface, why?, well it spends a lot less time on the surface getting ready to fly, less time to be spotted by a trout or bird, so what’s this all about, just now it is a fly called “the yellow Owl” that’s been doing the business here, and it’s a suspender buzzer, made famous by Davie Mc Phail, on his you tube videos, Huff of “Huff and Puff” fame, ties his own flies, he explained to me today that the Yellow owls he ties are slightly different, to the ones that you buy, in that his have a different type tail, are tied with wax thread and black thread for a body as opposed to thin wire CDC wing and a Hair lug thorax, he also went on to say that after a fly has caught say 2 fish, you have to change it as it gets destroyed by the trout chewing it, It must be working as he now supplies two others and their catching has improved dramatically, its been a great week with a few nights and mornings of fantastic fishing Ian Wallace and John Reid having a great night, several older gents doing well from the bank and generally everyone that comes here leave in great spirit, this is what we enjoy, Our new conservation ares are taking shape now would be good if it rained.
