Goldenloch

Last Monday, snowdrifts some up to 3 ft deep, the road down to Newburgh was blocked, tractors had been running on the snow making it virtually impossible for 4×4 cars to get grip, the loch was frozen over, the falling snow had turned to slush then frozen, making the ice a lot thicker quicker, however the swans worked hard at keeping an area free from ice, its was an area about the size of two tennis courts and on Wednesday, Brian Redpath, Blackpool, staying at a local hotel, unable to get home arrived and using some borrowed equipment, his words not mine was that he had enjoyed some “Amazing Fly Fishing” the flies he had been given were in one of the old loch leven tins, must have been about 30years old, plus a hardies rod and reel all supplied by the hotel, everything he was using was in mint condition, although he was being mega careful, the rod was bending, possibly like it had never been bent before, a bit concerned it may break I gave him a loan of a carbon rod and new reel and floating line, total catch in appalling conditions was 7, all returned, but he did get a Goldenloch Trump, a rainbow, blue and brown trout, the snow and ice basically all vanished by Saturday, and Sunday saw seven lads fishing, everyone having a great days sport with good clear water, certainly plenty of it, fishing was slow to start, but as the day progressed there was an abundant amount of fish showing on the surface, so something must have been hatching, everyone was using wet flies and buzzers and a few nymphs’ it was good average catch was 9, this is now mid March and the conditions will change very quickly, warm days are just around the corner, the summertime boys need to start thinking about getting outside, it can all change very quickly now, with the clock changing this coming weekend it means more sunlight in the evening, Easter will be with us soon and tee shirts roll on Summer we are waiting.
