Goldenloch
Nov-20th-Week-48-2017
The world we live in has changed, it is happening faster than anyone expected, hopefully its not to late to see some healing, I was born on a remote farm and have lived in the countryside all my life, as a child I spent not just hours, but days, weeks even months on my own, playing in woodlands, fields, rivers, ponds etc, the weather played a big part in my childhood, from what I can remember things happened, then they were over, Foggy days lasted a few days, nobody could see anything past a few feet, but once over it was done, thunderstorms were very dramatic and happened during the day, were as I can remember really dramatic and noisy, Frost and Ice was an exception and it lasted for months, December till March, So what’s my point well, with all these changes the animals, birds and fish have all had to adapt to a new set of conditions, one of the biggest changes that I have noticed is the lack of small winged insects, like flies, bugs, ladybirds, moths, butterflies, in general all that came from the grubs that used to be caterpillars maggots and stuff like that, its been exceptionally poor this year for small insects, a knock on is that the birds have suffered, also fish have not had nearly the same amount of surface or even sub surface, insects, buzzers and flies to actively feed on, Yes there have been fish rising, looking for grub, but there hasn’t really been a huge amount of stuff for them to get, a lot of these rising fish in some fisheries, the ones that stock every week are expecting fish pellets as that is what has happened in most of their short life, but in the wild the fish are being forced to go deeper and forage for food in the mud, they are looking for snails, bloodworms, beetles worms and anything else that lives down there, starting this spring at the “Goldenloch”, we are going to reverse this situation by creating a new and exciting area, which hopefully will extend to the whole loch, we used the 30 plus tons of weed, that was extracted from the loch last summer to make a huge compost heap, then mixing it with soil, into this we are planting Nectar and pollinating plants, hoping that eventually we will have areas that will encourage lots of winged insects butterflies, moths Etc, these will then lay there eggs hatching into new life which will then be flying over the water and entice the fish to jump even higher, If anyone has plants that fit this description and are looking for to be part of these plans bring them along I am sure there will be plenty space, It’s a project for life, by this I mean new life, bringing with it new and exciting fishing.
