October-31st –Week 44-2016
With the winter season now well under way this year, I am genuinely surprised at how many fish are active for what is basically the 1st week in November, from what I hear this is true for many other fisheries, catches are pretty good everywhere just now, although with us its still very fly specific, lures have not been working that well, small black flies, not unlike like bibios and small traditional wet flies have been doing the trick, as has some dry flies, Martin Nicol who only fishes dries has had a couple of really good days of late, people using or trying to use buzzers have been disappointed as the fish do not seem to be that interested in anything subsurface, but are more inclined to be going for surface flies, and that’s what’s that are doing the trick, however the most important thing is that people fishing hear have a pleasant and enjoyable day, an important part of that is the weather and this week has been great, maybe a wee bit cold some mornings but genuinely lads have done well and catches are excellent, Stewart Copland fishing with his brother in Law and Ewan had a Brown and a Rainbow in their catch making the day special for them, James Harold, visiting from Liverpool, couldn’t believe the weather conditions were so placid, they enjoyed a day session with 11 returned as did R Wallace Perth who from the bank returned 8, the improvements here are progressing well, with the water level now up to what was the 1996 level, which is a good 14 inches more that it was in the summer, the new outflow / overflow block work is complete, a temporary outflow pipe work has been installed, lets hope we do not get flood conditions, new boats are acquired and only have to be painted in our colours, down at the boat jetty there is a base installed for basically a lifting crane which will allow boats to be lifted from the water without the use of a forklift, this will be a huge difference to me especially in being able to clean the boats as well, hopefully I will have some kind of kabin that will house, electricity and a water supply for general use, another hopefully useful aid is going to be support bars that will be along side the boats so that anglers will be able to grab and use same as supports enabling them to pull themselves from the boats.
