Goldenloch
Feb 22nd –Week 08-2016
Since the beginning of last week the fishing has picked up dramatically, although no fish can be seen moving about on the surface, mostly due to the lack of any insects hatching, it is still the middle of February with cold frosty mornings, plenty fish are getting caught, mostly just off the bottom, or rather in the lower depths, there hasn’t been any movement in the water temperature, which is at just 2 degrees in the first 10 > 15 inches of water, but it is at 12 degrees on the bottom, that always remains the same most of the year, so its not surprising that this is were the fish are, also at the sides of the loch where the water depths vary much more, the catches are stronger, possibly due to the small beetles and snails being washed in with the wind. One chap had several fish on, which he kept losing on retrieval, eventually getting so frustrated checked his line and lo and behold the hook had snapped off, Andy Fraser, Ladybank, has had a one or two really successful trips here lately, he had another catching 11, all from the bank of which 2 of the fish were 3 lb+ Brown trout, There is a fair bit of feeding on the bottom just now which seems to be reacting to the days when we have sunlight, it doesn’t have to be a warm day just a bright one, on the rare occasions that are completely flat calm the water is smooth, motionless and has a mirror finnish, in the summer when things are hatching, you never get the mirror effect as there is always something lying on the water, empty shells, dirt, leaves etc, it is stunning to see, would anglers also please refrain from standing in the boats, last week two chaps were standing and I can only assume they thought they could cast further, they would need to be Olympic swimmers to survive in the very windy cold water that was that day, I missed them when they left but they had my heart pounding for a while.
