Goldenloch aug -18-, week 31, 2014
The week of storms, started last Sunday with the hurricane left over’s which turned out for us to be just a lot of rain, at least the water level is now up to the max, we currently are at our January levels, the water temperature is now down to 14/15 degrees, that’s the lowest August temperature since we started taking temperature readings in 1999, putting this into perspective two years ago our water temperature for the whole of August September varied around 18/19 degrees, and the fishing then was hard, last year when we were carrying a lot more weed it was about 16, and that year we had some of the best dry fly fishing ever, just now however the fishing is to be fair pretty good there are a lot of sand martins and swallows feeding heavily in the mornings and early evenings fish are taking buzzers and nymphs, some peoples however have been doing exceptionally well using dry flies, Martin Nicol had a few all from the bank as did Tommy Steel, Alloa fishing with his dad in his 92nd year, not actually caught any but managed to retrieve 2, well done even managing to clonk it on the head, fished since he was 12 that’s 80 years fishing, when I asked him about the best place he ever fished he said a burn called the “Warroch” as a young lad during the war his mum used to make him cycle every week to get fish for the family supper on a Saturday and every week for nearly ten years without ever blanking on every trip he caught fish, only when he moved down to Edinburgh did it stop, I digress, back to the fishing the water is crystal clear and with a new stocking this week things should be pretty good for the next few weeks, the last couple of days were a bit windy and Saturday saw the wind turn blowing cut weed everywhere, really annoying however for those fishing in the predicted high winds that never happened catches were good and two lads had a ball yesterday of the bank, 2 each, loads returned and masses of offers. A young family staying at the nearby Lindores Lodge had a really excellent time and enjoyed there learn to fish session thankfully Camron Bowie caught them a fish.
