Goldenloch june -29-, week 25, 2014
Well some superb fishing this last week and it was spoiled just a tad on Saturday by a bitter cold east breeze that arrived from nowhere, just keeping the fish a wee bit lower in the water, however by the evening it had changed again and some chaps did very well, one with 6 or 7 and another 4 with loads of follows and chases, three others got really cold but were rewarded at the death with a couple of fish, the carp are doing a fantastic job and I can honestly say that we have no grass weeds nor any Canadian pond weed to bothering anglers, last year the areas that were unfishable are clear, it is fair to say however the water level is also much higher this year and that alone will stop the grass weeds from growing but even where the water is shallow the weeds are being grazed to the point that they are no longer there, we do have some duckweed that is floating about but it is not causing any harm, the water is crystal gin clear and the feeding and hatches are excellent with loads of swallows and bats feeding when there is not a cold wind, with the Brown trout that we introduced back in March which are diploid and capable of breeding we have been a little bit surprised and slightly bemused lately in that we have spotted rather a lot of small (tiny) brownies whilst fishing for small frogs for my grandsons nursery in the reedy area at the top of the loch and so far all attempts to catch some have failed miserably, the introduced Brownies were not big enough to breed and as far as I was aware our original Brown trout, which were genuine wild brownies were wiped out a couple of years ago after an algal bloom crash, but it may just be that some survived and have breed, wonders never cease, anyways heres hoping that they survive, but somehow think that the super hungry rainbows will get them, William Wilkie, a sprightly 88 years from St Andrews, caught and released, well actually lost a cracking 8 lb Blue trout as he was weighing it in his net, being assisted by his lifelong fishing buddy James Crow, the net split or rather a small hole became a big hole and the fish swam away, only the day before in Robbie’s in Dundee he had thought about buying a new net, one with a long handle, as bending down was beginning to be a problem, and the saying, never put of till tomorrow what you an do today springs to mind, Summer now here and a new load of fish this week should chase up the trout in the loch, please if camping bring your own logs as mine are mine, and if you bring a dog to the fishery please keep it on a lead and pick up the poo, Poor Cameron got covered in poo whilst strimming the grass.
