Goldenloch november 04 week 42
So the cold has arrived, up until Friday the fishing was good but Saturday morning saw our first ice of the year, at 8am the temperature dropped with the daylight and a very thin sheet of ice covered the flat calm water it wasn’t for long as soon the wind picked up and by 11 it was torrential rain one lad fishing who braved the elements had a few fish, but eventually succumbed to the driving wind, strangely however by 5pm all the bad weather had gone and the evening turned out to be glorious, albeit very cold, Sunday morning saw a few anglers arrive, all going out in boats, but it was cold and for the first time in months there wasn’t mush sign of fish moving, a few were caught but nothing like what it was the week before, its always the same when the temperature drops suddenly the fish just switch right off, this morning, Monday again it is very cold, with ice covering the cars and the loch a bit blustery, however it cant be that bad, as I have just watched a regular go out and catch more or less with his first cast, the cormorants were here today, as is our ever friendly otters, but a bit of bad news is that we have had to get one of our native swans put down, due to immigrant swans moving into the loch, about two months ago a pair of large Hooper swans arrived and they took over the dominancy of the loch from our resident smaller swans who had 4 signets, they were very aggressive, they have done nothing but fight and bully our swans, it did however look like they were starting to get along, but recently the aggression had started up again and our swans definitely were getting hammered, I phoned the RSPB and there reply was that it is what happens and nothing could be done, anyways Saturday saw one of our swans get into a massive fight and the outcome was a badly broken wing right in at the body so a call to the SSPCA brought out and inspector who took the poor bird away and sadly to say will probably just have it put down.
