Its not a great start to the year, in fact as far as I can remember this has got to have been the coldest, windiest wet start to any modern method fly fishing season ever, however fish are getting caught and its not the modern flies that are working the best, that’s giving quite a few people headaches, with the water that’s surprisingly for the cold weather got a lot of feeding in it anglers are having to think hard about what is going to entice the fish to take their fly, its all very well to go on the assumption that the fish will more or less take something that is bright or even remotely like a fly in the past few days we have had some pretty amazing rises, only last night after a nice warm afternoon, we had a spectacular period of about two to three hours of fish rising all over the loch and with 7 rods out on the water I was expecting some to have reported great catches but alas it wasn’t to be seemingly the fish were just interested in one thing and no one had been able to figure it out, one lad did say however that he had had loads of offers, another lad that did well was Stephen Mitchell, Bankfoot, who had fished in the morning caught 5 and returned 6, Stevie a angler for many years I am sure would have had a pretty comprehensive selection of flies and would not just be sitting over the deepest part of the water, Its now getting to that time of year where anglers expect to be able to come and just chuck out a line and catch a fish, but because the weather has been so cold and windy the fish are just that few weeks behind in being ready to actively feed, rises are happening and fish are moving but they are selective, I am sure guys can catch fish easy on some waters but here anglers are having to work a bit and find the right fly.
