Goldenloch may 06/ 2013 week 16
First week in May and its still cold, the fishing is still reasonably hard but most are getting something, its what would be best described as really having to work for a catch, on days when its warmer and it doesn’t have to be much, the fishing can be really quite good, last Tuesday saw for one elderly gent a complete flat calm when he arrived, as he went onto the water whilst the sun blistered above him, yes it did happen, for a very brief moment there were fish rising everywhere in all directions, quickly catching one which he lost, he then went on to get a further really good few takes and it was on inspection of his hook he then discovered that it had straightened and was now bent in an L shape, however he reckons he had more fun fighting with the fish and losing them than actually catching, the weekend was quite quiet and a bit blustery however, both days turned out mild and pleasant with anglers getting good catches especially of the bank, two couple up on holiday really enjoyed a few hours fishing with 4 fish caught using tadpoles and green diawl bachs, other flies doing well have been green buzzers and Montanans’ with other gents getting fish using dry flies Martin Nicol, Perth, last week having a few casts before going on holiday caught using dry flies, commenting that the fish just came from nowhere and took the fly good sport and very enjoyable, evening rises are starting to happen not every night but on nights with low wind and mild air, there has been a couple of good nights when its happened around 7pm, what is very noticeable this year is the amazing hatches that have been occurring with a massive amount of sand martins swallows and swifts feeding frantically, all day at pretty regular intervals the birds can be seen feeding hard over the water, its good to see this as during the last snowy icy spell I had seen quite a few dead sand martins’ lying around I think they were early arrivals and were caught out by the snow and ice, on certain days we can have up to three ospreys visiting this year, two of which are young ones and are really bad at catching fish giving light entertainment to anglers present.
