Goldenloch october 08 / 2012 week 41
This past week at the Goldenloch there has been a lot of fun for many, the fishing has been very good, with the fish all being caught in the middle of the loch, two weeks ago it was the long banking that was reliable and the area nearest the old jetty, but for some reason now it seems that the fish are feeding on nymphs and buzzers right in the middle of the loch, but what was making the fishing special was that many were catching using dry flies, Tom Anderson, Glenrothes on his first ever trip to the Goldenloch had 4 all on his own home tied dry flies, several beginners this past week have struggled however, due to the lack of fish showing close in, what has caused the fish to move is a mystery, but its been a lot colder for the last two weeks, we had also had a horrendous rain two weeks ago which saw the loch level rise dramatically and all the small birds, house Martins, swallows and swifts have gone, usually we would have seen them gathering on the phone lines, but not this year they just vanished from the skies, but the bats are still here, last night just at darkening we saw thousands of bats swooping over the loch surface, they scooping up the small flies that were hatching, plus there was a pretty good rise of fish with not an angler in sight, its that time of year when we put in our application for a permit to shoot cormorants and interestingly its been on the telly recently that we in the UK have to start protecting even more the protected species, there is a train of thought that these birds and the many others are declining in numbers, so how is it that we have in the summer numerous Ospreys daily ( this year on one day we had 19 visits), Sea Eagles and Buzzers constantly flying overhead (OK so they don’t eat Fish), Cormorants by the score daily, with Goosanders popping in when they feel like it, from the nearby bird conservation area, its not that I do not like birds in fact its the opposite for most of our married life we have always fed the birds, especially in hard weather, both Anne and I always make sure there is something available for the small birds, but never ever have we seen us putting out food and nothing coming to eat it, what’s happened, it seems that the bird population has moved from the countryside to the town or urban sites why has it happened, could it be all these predatory birds that the RSPB have reintroduced back into our countryside have chased everything away.
