Goldenloch june 10 / 2012 week 24
This has not been a good week at the Goldenloch, this algae that we have this year is just not doing anything it just lies there and looks like dark green pea soup on a dull day it is much lighter, we sent off more samples and had a big chat with an ecologist who informs us that what the algae needs is to feed and use up all the nutrients in the water this to enable it to change into a different form and then die, for it to do this we need continued bright sunny weather, not this dreary some sun, some wind and rain, what we have is a very fine algae which is spread through the to 2 to 3 feet of the loch it needs to start to join and become lighter floating to the surface at the moment it is doing nothing the N count and the phosphate levels are virtually the same as they were two weeks ago, also the bug life in the water is massive underneath the algae we have a huge amount of invertebrates and insects, buzzers etc, it seems that the conditions down there are just perfect for them to breed and survive, the fish have a huge and increasing food supply being offered to them no wonder the fishing is poor at the moment, its not that its not happening its just that they are not showing on the surface neither jumping or cruising, fish are being caught, Friday night saw a lad and his girlfriend from Newburgh catch 4 all from the bank on silver invictas also most visiting have left with at least one, however its still a waiting game I am afraid, it will improve I just don’t know when.
