Goldenloch may 28 / 2012 week 22
Its still here, the algae that is, and its not really getting much better, although the large lumps that were floating to the surface have now stopped, its mostly just debris that’s lying around, I think we have just about beaten the tiresome blanket algae, its definitely dead, as it now has gone a very dark brown and just pulls to bits, when we go to lift it, as for the loch itself we had another expert cast his very valued opinion on what has happened, seems like we are in a cycle, its because of the early world temperature rise, which we kinda knew anyway, but its also because last summer we had a very heavy weed growth, what seemingly happens is that this thick weed falls over and lies matted on the bottom, it then feeds the forming algae N and Phosphate allowing it to grow slowly all winter and then it explodes in growth when it gets higher temperatures in the spring, I am not even going to say how much that piece of wisdom cost, is there a remedy the answer is “no” not a legal one, what the public and anglers need to know is that all algaecides in the UK have been removed from the market for commercial fisheries and banned, however you can still buy them for ponds and garden situations, all are available in Europe and the American market, it actually looks like in the states there is absolutely no regulation as to what you can do if you own a piece of water or lake, so they may be testing uranium out there, but for us in the good old UK its, nowt, zero, nothing just encase Mrs Smiths dog grows two heads or the tadpoles develop extra powers and take over the world, the good old health and safety pops its head up yet again, but its not all doom and gloom we can of course go back to the early 19th century methods of dropping in some Copper Sulphate, that’s what they still do in the States and just type that in you tube, however pumping blue heavy metal into the environment is not an option here, many thanks to all the anglers who are still popping in you don’t realise how much your support means, a lot of fish are still getting caught Alex Burns had 3 on Sunday, we are still running our beginners class, nearly 200 complete absolute beginners have been with nearly all intending to take up the sport, well done to Tam.
