Goldenloch may 14 / 2012 week 20
Mother Nature must be really angry just now, for the weather that she has been doling out lately is certainly not what we would have expected at this time of year, this past week has been pretty horrendous, and very out of season for this time of year, it is one of the reasons why we are currently having such a massive problem with a very unseasonal algae attack, the really hot weather about five weeks ago started for us a chain of events that now sees the water here completely green, the water temperature rose very quickly by 6 to 8 degrees in the first week of April and caused the blanket weed Algae which normally lies on the bottom to swell and bubble, bringing it to the surface, We then spent many hours removing these very annoying floating lumps and in that process obviously disturbed a lot of sediment on the loch floor, we then expected this to settle and return to normal, however what actually happened was that the torrential rain that we had about 10 days ago flushed a huge amount of nitrogen and phosphate into the loch from the surrounding fields, with the resulting consequence of lifting the natural levels in the loch by a considerable amount which in turn has caused a very early unseasonal greening and over the past weekend has seen the water become almost unfishable, we stocked a large amount of fish on Wednesday past to try and make the fishing easier over this past weekend but it didn’t really work, however the really strong gale that blew up while the lads from Bonnyrig were there didn’t help, What’s next, well with straw now back in the water and almost every type of algae chemical killer now banned in this country, we will just have to ride this one out and wait and see, but it certainly is not good for business, the past weeks fishing has seen a few caught and surprisingly a few by complete beginners, we have now ran over 50 learn to fish courses this season with quite good results it will be good for fly fishing to have new people coming into the sport.
