Goldenloch march 26 / 2012 week 13
Dry Fly Fishing is as old and ancient as the hills, its a way of relaxing and catching food, it is probably a way our ancestors tried to outwit the fish, but today’s modern anglers don’t have to try that hard, most of the work has been done for them by the tackle manufacturers, so as a sport or as a way of relaxing it shouldn’t be that hard to turn up at any fishery and catch fish, but life’s not like that, certainly for some guys its not that easy, however some do expect to just arrive and catch fish, we have at the Goldenloch a small Stillwater of 12 acres, we stock it on demand, which is approximately every week or 10 days with 1 kilo and upwards rainbow trout, the water here is full of crustaceans especially shrimp, bloodworms and many other types of invertebrates’, the fish are spoilt for choice, they tend to go for one particular type of food source, this is what makes fishing here that bit harder, in that anglers have to find what the fish are being attracted to and then they have to try and match it, this year is unusual in that the food source is massive, it would seem that there has been a huge over hatch of bugs, the loch bottom is just moving with fodder and the fish are gorging themselves, rainbow trout are scavengers and will eat absolutely anything when they are hungry, but when they have fed well, they just go into sleep mode or rather standby, till something new takes their fancy, that’s why most visiting us really enjoy it and that why it becomes a way of relaxing as for those that are using traditional dry flies are getting satisfaction from achieving what they set out to do, but for some it becomes a frustration, stripping big lures, using blobs, and many other varied types of attracters that work well at other places, are just not working here and angler anger sets in, people come here to relax and enjoy there days fishing, there are many places where you can fish with lures or attracters, especially in Fife, coming here is for a days sport fishing, its enjoyment and pleasure, that’s what its supposed to be, its not about hammering fish or catching 15 in an hour, we are not that kind of place.
