Goldenloch june-14-10
This last week at the Goldenloch has been extremely hard fishing, however anglers have still managed to catch some very respectable catches, the first reason was the cold north east wind that was blowing for five days, it really put the fish down in the water and evenings that were building up for what looked like there was going to be a good rise never happened, very frustrating for those that were fishing, secondly the huge tadpole hatch that occurred some weeks ago has now produced a few billion tadpoles and the fish seem to be sucking these into their mouths and therefore are not that interested in anything else, unless it was sort of resembling a juicy variation of a big fat tadpole, the weed problem is now starting to ease quite considerably firstly we have cleared a large area at the front and at the far end of the loch it seems to be lying down the worst area is right in the middle and a bit up the bank side, what we have discovered is that this is not weed but a form of algae and as such is why we have been having such a problem trying to get rid of it,
(Chara ssp. Common name muskgrass, is a gray-green branched multicellular algae that is often confused with submerged flowering plants. However, Chara has no flower, will not extend above the water surface, and often has a “grainy” or “crunchy” texture. Chara has cylindrical, whorled branches with 6 to 16 branchlets around each node.)
But now that we have identified it and have managed to find another fishery with the same problem near Sheffield we have his ideas on how best to control it so as from to-day there is a new idea about to be tried. But something that we did find out is that the fish excel in it and that it is very common in the USA, grass carp and ducks love it and that it has a shortish growing period.
