Well I should have kept quite about the season starting good, this past week has seen shocking weather, with the only reasonable day being Tuesday, but worst this week has been the cormorants, because the weather is bad out at sea and in the estuary’s the cormorants come in land and look for easy prey, and for the pundits that say that they only go to deep water that’s rubbish, they arrive here about 6am and go straight to the far end, at the shallowest part and within minutes are gobbling down a trout, obviously I go and deter them by making loud bangs with my gun, but for them to be protected like the buzzers it makes you wonder about the sanity of the people that run this country, where and when is it going to stop, for the past few years the buzzard population has risen dramatically, so much so, we have virtually no small birds left here, usually during the winter months we would be inundated by robins and small birds, this year if you see one, you wonder how long its going to stay alive, as for the cormorants, I have never in 20+ years seen more than 3 or 4 at any one time, yet this morning I counted 8, interestingly we have a new guy on the block, and boy is he a biggy, many anglers have commented on him and wondered if it is a buzzard on steroids, no its just one of the many Sea Eagles that have been released into the environment, I believe they eat lambs for breakfast dinner and tea and as the new lamb season is about to start, it will be interesting to see what happens, and if the local farmers get compensation for lost lambs what about the fish we loose to the ospreys last year on a good day we could easily have 10 to 20 fish lifted by ospreys, I once tried to bring the subject up to an RSPCB official and he told me that I should be honoured to be visited by such a distinguished bird, actually if you can get close to one they have got to be the scruffiest, mingy birds you have ever seen, I’ve been about 10 feet from one that was worrying into a beautiful 3 to 4 lb blue trout and thought it was a real ugly b—-r, As for visiting birds getting fish, Betty from Lochgelly was here on Tuesday catching 2 and I think released 1 she was using a turquoise fly of some description not her usual pink thing.
