May 1st –Week 18-2016
I feel that this horrible spell of weather is just going on and on, it’s just making a complete mess out of peoples days off, for a lot of people going fishing is a treasured break, its everyone’s little bit of something special, to them, a days fishing, whether it be boat or bank, is most enjoyable when it’s a nice day, all the ingredients making a complete special day for individuals are different but the one that helps the most is the weather, again this morning Carol Kirkman on the BBC said a warmer spell is coming in the next few days, however she said that last week as well, the water temperature just now is lower that its ever been for the 1st May since 1994 its 8.6 degrees and the water is crystal clear, we had a fair bit of wind last night but this morning Monday its all calm, so what’s been happening on the loch, for some its incredibly easy once you have found the right fly as demonstrated by Brian Dewar on Saturday, Brian was using a very small black buzzer and I mean small and had caught fish regularly on his few hours fishing, others were struggling, but it was very cold, interestingly one gent from the bank caught a blue trout, a rainbow and a brown trout all on his home tied muddlers, with every fish over 3 lbs and all returned safely the smile on his face was a picture, a return trip to the vice now planned to tie more for his summers fishing, The fish quality just now is undeniably amazing, we have had a large carryover of fish from the previous few seasons and last years June purchase of 750 2lb brown trout have seen them develop into pretty amazing specimens’, very highly coloured with exceedingly large tails, and their distinctive spotting they are very hard fighting and a great prize to anglers that catch them, our wee loch is doing very well at supporting these fish and has a massively diverse amount of insect life, which never fails to amaze us, over the past many years we have been part of a survey which has been documenting insects and flies in small inland waterways, a research project being carried out by the Scottish Environmental agency, one of the findings so far is that there has been a huge increase in insect and crustacean activity, which is attributed to the farmers using much gentler types of herbicide sprays and chemicals, for example the fresh water shrimp is now a full 10% larger than 15 years ago, a large stonefly nymph population was found last year and the hatches of flies on warm sunny days are returning to what it used to be like 20+ years ago, so its all good for the fishing.
