To be perfectly honest fishing at this time of year was never going to be that easy, Firstly, as fish are cold blooded, they require very little food intake in the form of carbohydrates’ or protein, they do not require to heat up their bodies like we do, so their food intake is only a fraction of there body size, Secondly, as the water temperatures are very low, the amount of small invertebrates in the water just now is almost zero, but there are some fresh water shrimp, small snails and bloodworms, so how is it that fish are being caught, well they aren’t really, it has to be that they are recently stocked fish, that are accustomed to feeders firing twice a day, they throw pellets out on a regular basis and the fish get into a habit, or fish that are in an area of water that the sun gets to, which in turn warms, ever so slightly the water and the fish and makes the fish become a little bit active, in turn those fish prowl just under the surface looking for easy food, sometimes it just happens that the sun especially where the water is shallow will warm a particular spot and the fish respond by popping their heads up just to see what’s happening, on Saturday past, we had just such a situation here, when Sandy Drummond, Kings kettle had 14 all caught using sedges and or diawl bachs, Sandy an experienced angler noted fish moving regularly n one particular spot and went to have a look, being two weeks since we last stocked it had to be that the fish here were doing something or something was happening, as the day progressed the fish were being seen down the full length of the bank at exactly the same distance out, from that moment on the bank anglers all started to catch fish and very soon were bagged up, however at around 3.30 pm the sum dropped behind the hill and it all stopped and reverted back to quiet.
