Goldenloch march-10, week 10, 2014
Ouch, today it is really cold and frosty, this morning, a really hard dawn frost, but at last a day with no wind, its looking like its going to be a nice day, again I woke up early and went down to the loch as soon as daybreak arrived, about 6 am this morning and 6 or so cormorants were circling overhead, they have been around at this time of day for about a month, if I don’t keep them away they will attract more, they roost in a big tree down at Lindores loch and even although there is a gamekeeper on the estate there, and the guy who owns the loch lets out the fishing to a neighbour, they do absolutely nothing about the cormorants’ of which there must be 30 +, this tree is famous as a cormorant roost and has been like this for many years, back in the day when Lindores was one of Scotland’s premier fisheries I can recall that there were 50 or so birds in it, to me its absolutely astounding that no one is bothered about the damage that these vermin do, one large bird can easily consume at least 3 X 2lb trout as I have seen on examining a dead one, if the fish are smaller these birds catch at least 6 or more, they then find a stone or something and regurgitate the fish back up expelling them back onto the ground in front of them, just a pure waste, why I have no idea, but on examining these fish it is clear to see that the acids inside these birds must be pretty powerful, as the fish are usually half eaten by it, so quite simply put 6 cormorants will easily eat 3 fish each per day and that’s 126 fish a week which equates to about £500, over the years we have been hit quite hard but nothing like the damage that gets done at Loch Leven where the RSPB have Vane farm, a bird sanctuary and where there are hundreds of these birds, around here there is Lochmill, I went up last week and there where 11 on it, Lindores has the roosting tree but there were no birds in the water, we have our usual between 6 and 10 visiting birds so its just another day at the loch, the fishing is getting much better with fish starting to show on the surface but the cold is still keeping the fish down, today should see things getting a bit warmer and hopefully starting to dry out.
