Goldenloch june 17 / 2013 week 22
Its been a really quiet week at the Goldenloch, that is normal for this time of year, but this year it is even quieter than ever, the economy has a lot to answer for, people just don’t have the cash that they used to have to spend, I mean the extra cash, fishing is a luxury and fly fishing for trout even more than lets say course fishing or sea fishing, with them you are using something (bait or a lure) to entice the fish onto your hook, however with fly fishing ( which is a personal challenge) you are presenting to the trout, a near life copy of a natural fly that the fish wants to eat, the skill is in making this fly, then in moving it in or on the water, so as it behaves like the real thing, this is the bit that a lot of people find hard, so what is it that makes this sport so appealing, is it the challenge, getting out into the open countryside where you know there are fish in the water and its all about catching them with your equipment, or is that you’ve had a busy week and you just want some downtime of your own, what we try to cater for here at the Goldenloch, is both of these situations, we cant fight nature and present the angler with the perfect water all the time, a lot of people catch a lot of fish by fly fishing lures, yes its not that hard to go pulling lures in clear water which is really a bit of a cross between fly fishing and coarse fishing, and it is accepted in this world, however the real buzz has got to be fishing dry flies, in water that is not suitable for lures i.e. a river or a loch that is shallow or weedy, the past few weeks here at the Goldenloch has seen a lot of great fishing, mostly by guys fishing small dry flies, yes in the weedy side of the loch, the other side the water is crystal clear and suits the lures, but regardless of whichever method we have had more compliments’ from anglers these past few weeks than we’ve had for a long time, several times this year we have had proper old fashioned rises of fish, and as a loch operator it is nice to see these spectacular events occur, only the other evening three guys fishing were suddenly presented with, flocks of sand martins, swallows, swifts, seagulls and fish jumping everywhere, two of the lads fishing lures just kept thrashing the water while the third sat back and took it all in, speaking to them later, he said he was going to get some decent flies now, small dry flies, and learn how to fish properly.
