“The Goldenloch”Fishery Blog, Monday, 27/06/2022, Week 26.
Water levels are starting to fall quickly now, the result of this recent long spell of dry weather, some rain has fallen, but it’s just been absorbed by the very dry ground, a really good plus point about this is that any fertiliser that has been put on the fields by the farmers is staying where it was meant to be, it is being used by the crops, not being washed out adding Nitrogen and Phosphates to the water table, the upside for fisheries is that the green algae blooms are possibly a lot less of a problem this year, a lot less than normal, we have mostly clear water here at the “Goldenloch”, OK, its weedy but the fishing has never been better, when you look at weeds that have been dragged out they are full of stonefly larvae {cased caddis fly}, millions of Bivalves {pea muscle}, Pond snail, Ramshorn snails, loads of feeding, there are clear areas to fish in, but anglers are drawn to where there are fish visible, and that’s in the weeds, in the water on taking samples can be seen Midge larvae, fresh water shrimp { Blue version) catch returns this year are exceptionally high, as the water temperature are climbing quickly, now at 17.9 degrees, as it is warming I have to ask that anglers refrain from bringing fish into the boats to release them, which really is not necessary if barbless hooks are being used, thus avoiding unnecessary handling, it has been noted recently that some lads are just being a wee bit rough with the fish, my reason for commenting about this is that some 11 fish were picked up on Saturday round the margins, it may be something in the wildlife that’s killing them, (Otters) we do expect some deaths, as the Ospreys often fail to lift fish out the water due to the size but this is a high number, it was also noted today a couple of fish unable to dive due to air in their swim bladder, which is a sure sign that they have been out the water to long, Rod Thaw back from his hols tired and weary but still had time to go fishing all returned, John Paisley, using a black Klinkhamer 4 returned, George Duff 7 using a hares ear an Emerger and a buzzer, Jock Souter back from hols in the USA had 3 on CDC Owls, Cammy had 14 on CDC Owls, Sandy Band 7 using Shipman’s Buzzers, Graham Brailsford 8 Cand R CDC Buzzers, Colin Hay loves his evening fishing 6 on a daddy, /PT Muddler/wickams, to many more to mention but all having a good time, I have been busy on the loch apart from pulling out weed, in that at the top right hand side I am pretty sure is where the Otter comes in I am refencing, which means removing the old knackered fence putting in new corner posts and erecting the nets and stobs that’s still to do however I plan to plant more butterfly plants, pics this week are again from Kenneth O’Keeffe and a couple from me to boot.
