“Goldenloch”
March- 04th- 2019, Week 9
Back to colder weather, well it had to happen as the recent warm spell was so out of alignment with regular nature, it’s interesting to note that some fisheries after stocking last week, have all been having some amazing catches, that monster fish are back on the agenda, it used to be that occasionally a big fish was caught, and with a fair degree in skill, patience, an angler would be rewarded with his amazing catch, now that is no longer the reward, all an angler has to do is find the right place to go to, and without a lot of skill or ability he will eventually be rewarded, with at least one or two maybe more, the fly used is not nothing like something that can be found naturally, but a copy of a trout pellet, which said fish was fed on probably the day before, so why is this happening, I have no idea, just that it is, competitions are being held and the winners are usually the same each year are just the ones fortunate to strike into a big fish, if all fish were the same size, then surely the ability to fish would determine the winner, trout master is another example of a competition where a lucky guy, fishing a big fish water will go forward to represent his fishery into a highly competitive situation, where he will up against some real hard core anglers. The thing about going Fly Fishing is and still is, that it is something a person wants to do, on and individual basis, you can on your own, enjoy the environment and solitude of being at the bank side or in a boat, and your own skill is what gives you maximum pleasure, yep there are some who would use worms or maggots making it easier to catch fish, but only you have the satisfaction that your fish was caught on an imitation fly, even better if you tied it yourself, Why then is everyone beating the drum about fishing for big fish, is it that they find the old fashioned way of using traditional flies to slow and boring, or is it that it is easier to become a hero using bungs blobs wotsits etc, these so called competitions that are being held if all the fish were 12lbs then it would be interesting to see who caught the most, Fishing for charities is a very debatable point and we have done masses in the past, but I find it extremely difficult to support fishing competitions’ that say they are raising cash to go towards particularly fields, asking the question once when we raised £5000+ for the Macmillan, that I wanted to know in detail how much was going to this good cause I was told that the money would be put to good use, not satisfied I went to the head office in Castle Street, Edinburgh to ask the same question, again I was met with an even nastier reply, They were adamant that I had to hand over the monies even though I felt I was being ripped off, that the anglers that raised the money new that this was the charity where the cash was going, I reluctantly handed it over. Meeting the rep one day, who no longer worked as a fundraiser he told me he received 30k for his efforts.
