Goldenloch
November – 19th – Week46-2018
Now this year we have proper winter fishing, everywhere lochs, and rivers up and down the country, have seen the temperature drop in the last few weeks from 12 degrees to below 5 degrees, the effect is that all insect life or rather water bourne insects, have either died or stayed in the mud in the bloodworm / pupae form, but definitely there is very little activity in the water, back some 15 years ago when the winters started quicker and lasted longer till mid March, the fishing here at the “Goldenloch” was always pretty good, there is a deep healthy rich in feeding mud, on the bottom of the loch, it is crawling with larvae, snails and now pea mussels, which are new in this part of Scotland, this is all part of global warming, but with crystal clear water how do anglers catch fish, one way is, fresh stock every couple of days or weekly and anglers will catch using bungs and blobs, with hungry fish thinking they are getting pellets, head torches in the dark, but that used to be called poaching, stripping lures in the water is the most common method, this emulates young alevins swimming to get away from predatory rainbows, blues and brown trout, but a true blue die hard angler will still fish using Scottish wet flies, or even dry flies, we have an army of lads who just love their me time and using this as a preferred method will catch fish, however it takes a huge amount of skill and patience and a lot of summer anglers or beginners become frustrated at not being able to catch anything, from my viewpoint I see it all the time and guys that can catch say 5 or 6 fish in July / August when the fly life is buzzing get extremely anxious as they are making soft contacts with fish, but catch nothing, however lads that fish in the winter tend to be a lot more adapt at knowing what they are doing, George Murphy and his bud Eric Gibson visiting from afar, George staying at the same spot using various bloodworms had 11, Grant McGregor, Kirkcaldy fishing as usual from a boat had 7 using a PTN and a butcher, old flies, Trev and Dan Peach fishing from the bank had a great afternoon on Tuesday 9 fish on damsels, as did Alan Hyndman, John Bashford, Kinross trying out a black and green small lure had 11, Rod Thaw just not having his usual blistering day only managed 3 while his boat partner Les Gunn had 7
