Goldenloch
October – 14th – Week-41-2018
Mid October, Storm Callum, Lots of Wind, Lots of rain, Flat calm, hot, cold, so its been interesting fishing this last week, pretty much its is as predicted that the fish are in winter feeding mode now, are active in all areas, the loch is full of grub for them to pick from, all the fish being caught have full bellies, “The Goldenloch” is an inland still water, we have a water inlet [burn] and an overflow, which we use to control the depth of the loch, this year the water stopped running out the overflow in May, it still has a bit to go before we are back at capacity, the lowest it dropped, was 30cm, that then lead me to thinking about the loch floor, so this year we have been conducting a pretty intense and comprehensive survey, with the aid of a university student, a bathymetric survey of the loch floor, what this does is show the deeper and shallow areas of the loch allow a map [legend] to be drawn, a lot of the freshwater lochs in Scotland were done back in the 1900s, as per my pictures, anyway the fishing here this last week for most has been pretty good on Wednesday, John Bashford and Sandy Drummond both did well approx 10 to the boat, every fish around the 3 lb mark, Grant McGregor on great form using a pheasant tailed nymph had 7 all returned but he lost even more, Trev and Dan Peach on the advice of others started catching fish, A Morgan, 8 returned plus 2 for 5 lbs, A Cuthbert, 8 returned 2 kept for 5 lbs, more fun was had by K Mackie, on the windiest day of the year, he had one of his best days ever ( His words) using a Gold head daddy, 8 returned 2 kept for 4.5 lbs, Sunday saw Dave Wilson, catch 2, his boat partner Rod Thaw had 14, both Brian Dewar and Alec Burns 6 each, interestingly the way to catch fish here has changed this last week and small lures have started to be back in favour, the normal tactics in going fishing here would pretty much be a floating line and the depths controlled by the type of leader used, the weight of flies, but most importantly the way the line is cast and then retrieved, as is normal, however this year an observation has been that the thinner and pretty much transparent the leader, the more successful the fishing, the downside to that is that a lot of fish get lost as the line is so light it is easily broken.
