To-day Friday, we have at last found out what the problem is with the fishing, and thank goodness its not that hard to fix, basically we have got brown algae, it’s an unusual type in that unlike its cousins it does not produce oxygen but consumes it, and the expelled carbon dioxide lies in the top few inches of water, what is happening is that the nitrates and phosphates that are coming of the fields are feeding the algae these nutrients should be going to the vegetation but cant as the algae is blocking the sunlight from the plants and not allowing them to photosynthesize, we have not been able to detect the low o2 levels because the wind has been oxygenating the water, what we need to do is allow the algae to burn out this usually takes about 6 weeks well we must nearly be there now and also we have to oxygenate the water This algae is harmless and is not like the blue green algae, it however can crash like all other algae’s, and that if any is what I am most worried about, as an algae crash could cause high fish loss due to rapid deoxygenating of the water, my problem here is that I am currently well overstocked due to thinking that the fish were gorging on bottom feeding which they are but not for the reasons we thought anglers are still getting good catches but deep down and that’s hopefully going to change.

To book a boat or a place phone on 01337840412 or email to info@goldenloch.co.uk
Yours sincerely: John Nicol.
